SUMMARY:When Stress is More Than a Season - Lesley Kelly
DESCRIPTION:Farming can be both a rewarding and demanding occupation where farmers experience highs and lows and mounting stress. Everyone feels stress and there can be lots of negative stress on the farm. As farmers\, we know how to recognize stress in our livestock\, crops\, and equipment. But do we know how to recognize when stress is too much for us and what we can do to help get through those stressful times? \nIn this presentation\, Lesley will share 5 tips using her “Weather the STORM” strategy and the things she’s learned that have helped her family and farm get through stressful times such as: \n– S – Stress: What stress is and the signs and symptoms to watch out for \n– T – Take Action: How to recognize and ask yourself when stress is too much; and knowing that your stress is real but it may be different to what someone else is going through \n– O – Open Communication: How our farm overcame the stresses together through communication and how to talk about mental health on the farm and in agriculture. \n– R – Relationships: What to do when stress from the farm and relationships spill over into each other and can impact our relationships and potentially\, the farm \n– M – Management: Stress management tips and tools to help yourself and others when stress is high and immediate and long term strategies \n  \nJoin us November 17th at the Ashmont Agriplex for Supper at 6:30 with Lesley’s presentation to follow. \nTo register call the LARA office at 780-826-7260

SUMMARY:Jimmy Emmons: Long Live The Soil!
DESCRIPTION:Jimmy is the third generation on his family farm in Oklahoma. He and his wife Ginger have been farming and ranching together since 1980. They have a diverse 2000 acre cropping operation growing wheat\, soybeans\, sunflowers\, alfalfa hay\, canola\, and several cover crops for seed. They also have a 250 cow/calf herd and take in yearling cattle for custom grazing on the nearly 6000 acres of native range. \nJimmy quit plowing 10 years ago to begin rebuilding his soils and says by adding diverse cover crop mixes to his operation over the same period he’s cut his farm’s overall purchased fertilizer use by 85%. He loves to share his passion for soil health. “I really think we have got to get them to understand that the health of our soil is like the health of our bodies. If you have high blood pressure or cholesterol\, you can go on and on and we still function but we don’t function at our full capacity\,” Mr. Emmons says. “It’s the same way with soil. If it’s not healthy\, it may be functioning and growing a crop—but not to its full capability.” \nJimmy is committed to improving the soil resources on his land\, and hopes others will follow suit—not just for the sake of the resources\, but also for the sake of their farming operations. From a business perspective\, Mr. Emmons believes improving soil health will improve his businesses’ bottom line. “I’m very passionate about getting to the next level of production.” \nJoin us August 16th for a day to get dirty as a portion of the day will be in field. Come dressed for the weather.

SUMMARY:Lac La Biche Summer Field Day
DESCRIPTION:Join us July 27th at Craigend Hall for the Lac La Biche Summer Field Day! \n10 AM to 3 PM with lunch included in registration! \nGrant Lastiwka will be joining us to talk about perennial forages response to drought and extreme heat with strategies to recover from last years growing conditions to aid plant recovery.  Grant has worked in Central Alberta with Alberta Agriculture in varying roles: Forages/Grazing/Livestock/Economics Extension for over 30 years. Those efforts are almost always related to trying to realize the value from seizing the opportunity of managing forages and grasslands to be a highly productive crop. His forage management thought is from the plant\, to the soil\, to the livestock\, to the people\, and to the consumer. \nAlso included in the day will be a plot tour of the impact of seeding rate and depth on canola production.
