Secret World of Soils Program

Secret World of Soils

Unlock the secret world beneath your feet

LARA invites grades 4 to 6 students to discover the hidden world beneath our feet through the Secret World of Soils Program. This interactive, science-based experience teaches students to dig into the vibrant ecosystem living in the soil and discover why it matters to everything we grow, eat, and depend on.

A Living World Beneath Our Feet

Soil isn’t just dirt—it’s a dynamic, living system teeming with microorganisms, nutrients, water, and organic matter. Through hands-on activities and engaging demonstrations, students explore:

Soil Biodiversity – Meet the microbes, fungi, and tiny critters that drive nutrient cycles and keep plants healthy.

Soil Structure & Texture – Feel the difference between sand, silt, and clay, and learn how soil composition influences water, roots, and crop growth.

Ecosystem Functions – Discover how soil filters our water, stores carbon, supports food production, and plays a key role in climate resilience.

Throughout the program, students investigate how soil systems support life, how human activities influence soil health, and what we can do to protect this essential natural resource. Real-world examples connect classroom learning to agriculture, food systems, and environmental stewardship.

Cost & Eligibility
