Looking to stretch your grazing season? This project explores whether under-seeding spring cereals for silage with Italian ryegrass can deliver high-quality regrowth and extend fall grazing for Alberta producers—reducing reliance on stored feed.

Across three field-scale sites in the MD of Bonnyville and County of St. Paul, LARA is under-seeding soft white spring wheat for silage with Italian ryegrass (6 lbs/ac). We’re measuring silage yield, ryegrass establishment and regrowth, forage quality, and total grazing days. The project also tracks potential cost savings through reduced feed use, supported by an on-farm partial budget analysis.

Ryegrass regrowth will be reassessed in spring 2027 to better understand its carryover potential—and what it means for long-term grazing strategies.
