Riparian Area Program

Riparian Area

Stewardship in Action

LARA invites Grade 4–6 classrooms to step outdoors and explore the connection between land and water through our Riparian Area Education Program. Through hands-on activities and guided discovery, students learn how riparian areas—like wetlands, streambanks, and dugouts—help keep ecosystems healthy and support agriculture.

A Living Watershed Classroom

Our riparian area program transforms the outdoors into an interactive classroom where students learn about:

Plants & Soil – Discover how plants and roots help hold soil in place, reduce erosion, and keep water clean.

Water in Action – Explore how water moves across the land and take part in simple water testing activities to see what healthy water looks like.

Wildlife Connections – Search for tracks, insects, and signs of life while learning how riparian areas provide homes for wildlife.

Farming & Stewardship – Learn how farmers and ranchers care for the land and water to keep livestock healthy and ecosystems strong.

Throughout the day, students make real-world connections between science and agriculture as they explore how soil, water, plants, and animals all work together. Activities are designed to spark curiosity, build observation skills, and support Alberta curriculum outcomes in science, environmental stewardship, and critical thinking.

By the end of the program, students will understand how healthy riparian areas support clean water, strong ecosystems, and sustainable farms—and how they can play a role in caring for the environment.

Cost & Eligibility

Thanks to generous support from our municipal partners—the MD of Bonnyville and County of St. Paul—the Riparian Area Program is FREE for all schools within our area.
